When is a Medical Exam Required?
Not everyone needs a medical exam. LIC has 'non-medical' limits that depend on your age and the sum assured you're applying for. Below these limits, you just need to fill a health declaration form.

- •35-45 years: Non-medical limit typically ₹10-15 lakh

What Tests Are Done?
LIC uses empanelled doctors and hospitals. The tests vary based on your age and sum assured:
- •Basic medical: Blood pressure, height, weight, pulse, general physical exam
- •Blood tests: Blood sugar (fasting & PP), complete blood count, liver function, kidney function, cholesterol
- •Urine test: Routine urine analysis
- •ECG: Required for age 35+ or high sum assured. Records heart's electrical activity.
- •TMT (Treadmill Test): Required for age 45+ or very high sum assured. Tests heart under stress.
- •Chest X-ray: May be required for age 45+ or if doctor recommends
- •Special tests: HIV, Hepatitis B, specific tests if medical history warrants
How to Prepare for the Medical Exam
Simple tips to ensure accurate results:
- •Fast for 10-12 hours before the exam (water is okay)
- •Avoid alcohol for at least 48 hours before
- •Get a good night's sleep the night before
- •Don't exercise heavily on exam day morning
- •Carry a list of any medications you take regularly
- •Carry your Aadhaar card and policy proposal form
- •If you have existing reports (recent blood work, etc.), bring them
What if Results Aren't Perfect?
Having a health condition doesn't mean you can't get insurance. Here's what typically happens:
- •Minor issues (slightly high BP, borderline sugar): Policy may be issued with a small extra premium (loading)
- •Moderate issues (controlled diabetes, mild obesity): Policy issued with higher premium loading (10-25% extra)

- •Smoking/tobacco: Premiums are typically 30-50% higher than non-smokers

LIC has a network of empanelled doctors and hospitals across India. Your agent will arrange the medical exam at a location convenient to you. The cost of the medical exam is borne by LIC. you don't pay anything.
The entire process usually takes 1-2 hours. Results typically come back within 3-7 days. Once results are clear, your policy is processed.
