Worked Example: A Forgotten Policy Number
A common situation: a policy bought through a family elder 10 years ago. You only have the name of the policyholder and a vague memory of the LIC branch. Here is what to do, in order.
Step 1: Check old records. Tax-saving proof submissions from prior years, bank statements showing LIC premium debits, or the original premium receipt envelope often have the policy number.
Step 2: Visit the licindia.in 'Search Policy Number' link if available, or use the 'Forgot Policy Number' option on the customer portal. You will need policyholder name, date of birth, and one of mobile/email/Aadhaar.
Step 3: If online recovery fails, walk into any LIC branch (does not have to be the original branch). Carry your Aadhaar, PAN, and one premium payment proof. The branch can pull policy details on the spot.
Step 4: Once you have the policy number, register on the customer portal so you never need to repeat this process. Add your current mobile and email.
When Online Methods Don't Work
Online status checks fail in specific situations. Knowing the alternative path saves time.
- •Mobile number not registered: You cannot get OTP. Visit a branch with ID proof to update your mobile, then register online.
- •Policy is very old (pre-2000): Some legacy policies are not fully digitized. Branch visit is required.
- •Policy is in a deceased relative's name: Online access is locked. You need to file claim documents at the branch first.
- •ULIP policies sometimes have separate login portals. Check the proposal documents for the correct portal URL.
- •Group insurance policies (employer-provided) are not visible in the individual customer portal. Contact your HR or the master policyholder.
Common Mistakes When Checking Status
- •Using an old registered mobile number. If you changed numbers and never told LIC, OTP-based login fails. Update the mobile at a branch first.
- •Confusing 'paid-up' with 'lapsed'. A paid-up policy is still alive with reduced benefits; a lapsed policy has stopped giving cover. The status page shows both clearly.
- •Believing the SMS reply blindly. SMS gives basic info. For accurate premium and bonus details, use the portal.
- •Sharing OTP with anyone claiming to be from LIC. LIC never asks for OTP over phone. Treat every such call as a scam attempt.
- •Trying to log in too many times after wrong password. After three to four failed attempts, the account locks for 24 hours. Use the password reset link instead of retrying.
Frequently Asked Questions
Q: Can I check status of someone else's policy? A: Only if you are listed as a co-owner, nominee, or guardian. The portal binds to the registered policyholder's mobile number and PAN.
Q: Why is my bonus accumulation showing zero? A: Bonuses are credited annually by LIC, usually after the financial year close (September to November). If you check earlier in the year, the latest year's bonus may not yet be visible.
Q: My maturity date shows incorrectly. What do I do? A: This is rare but happens for legacy policies. Email LIC's customer care with your policy number and the correct date from the policy bond. They will rectify within 7 to 10 days.
Q: Can I update my address through the portal? A: Yes. Use the 'Service Requests' section to submit a change of address. You will need to upload an address proof. Most updates are processed within 5 working days.
Q: Does the LIC portal show bonus rates declared each year? A: It shows the bonus credited to your specific policy. To see the underlying bonus rates declared by LIC for all plans, check our LIC Bonus Rates History article or LIC's annual bonus circular on licindia.in.
